Job Summary:
The Special Collections Archivist is responsible for managing and preserving unique, rare, and valuable materials housed in the library's special collections. This role involves overseeing the acquisition, organization, cataloging, and access to special collections items, ensuring their long-term preservation and facilitating their use by researchers and library patrons. The Special Collections Archivist collaborates closely with various stakeholders to develop and implement strategies for the growth, organization, and promotion of special collections.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Manage special collections materials, including manuscripts, rare books, photographs, maps, and other archival items.
2. Develop and enforce policies and procedures for the acquisition, appraisal, processing, preservation, and access of special collections.
3. Create detailed finding aids, inventories, and catalog records for special collections items in compliance with archival standards.
4. Oversee the arrangement, description, and preservation of special collections materials, ensuring proper storage, handling, and conservation.
5. Collaborate with library staff and external partners to acquire and process new special collections materials, ensuring their proper integration into the collection.
6. Provide reference services and research support to library patrons, researchers, and scholars using special collections materials.
7. Plan and execute outreach and educational activities to promote the use of special collections, such as exhibitions, workshops, and lectures.
8. Collaborate with library colleagues and faculty to integrate special collections materials into teaching and learning activities.
9. Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices related to special collections management and archival work.
10. Contribute to grant writing and fundraising efforts to support special collections initiatives.
Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field, with a specialization in archival studies or special collections.
2. Proven experience working with special collections materials, including appraisal, arrangement, description, preservation, and access.
3. Strong knowledge of archival principles, practices, and standards such as Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Encoded Archival Description (EAD).
4. Familiarity with library cataloging standards, such as Resource Description and Access (RDA) and MARC21.
5. Proficiency in archival management systems, databases, and software for collections management and discovery.
6. Excellent research skills and ability to provide reference services using special collections materials.
7. Experience planning and implementing outreach activities, exhibitions, and educational programs.
8. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
